Special Grand Jury Declines Indictment in Fatal Shooting
A special grand jury in Ohio has declined to indict the eight Akron police officers who shot and killed 25-year-old Black man Jayland Walker last year. The grand jury's decision came after months of investigation and public outcry over the incident.
Walker was shot on June 27, 2022, following a police chase that ended in a parking lot. The officers fired more than 90 shots at Walker, who was unarmed. The grand jury's decision not to indict the officers has sparked outrage among some community members, who believe that Walker was unjustly killed.
Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said in a statement that he respected the grand jury's decision but that he remained committed to reforming the city's police force. He said that the city would be reviewing the grand jury's report and would implement any necessary changes to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
