The GHC Heavyweight Championship was established in 2001 after the collapse of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) Japan promotion. The first champion was Jun Akiyama, who defeated Mitsuharu Misawa in the tournament final. Since then, the championship has been held by a wide range of wrestlers, including Kenta Kobashi, Go Shiozaki, and Hiroshi Tanahashi.
